Final Analysis on Scouting Cameras

"Just using these cameras to discover the unknown has been as enjoyable as the successful hunt one could have by having the knowledge they provide. Having a number of cameras dedicated just to the security of our property and equipment also gives us of piece of mind.

To date we have been successful in catching trespassers and in one case an ongoing drug deal using our property (we placed a camera high up in a tree). We have been able to watch those with spots grow to be a wall hanger.

It is unreal the amount of other than game animals you will find when using these cameras. With our Buckeye cameras which trigger at a tenth of a second, we have captured pictures of animals moving at full speed in mid air. Recently we captured a couple of pictures of a large cat which somewhat resembled a mountain lion (pictured on the left with another smaller bobcat). The angle of the pictures failed to show the animals tail area. We moved several cameras to circle that area in order to maybe verify our findings. This critter has so far eluded our attempts.

Putting cameras to view salt licks, feeders, scrapes, rubs, creek crossings and food plots will increase your success for lots of pictures. Many different animals come to and use salt.

The question of the flash spooking the game is somewhat founded. The regular incandescent flash has on a few occasions spooked deer. We also have a very large mature 8 pointer that seems to pose for his pictures. We make it a practice to visit most areas weekly. By doing this the animals at first went nocturnal. They now have slowly gotten use to our visits and are now on a full 24 hour routine with nearly as many daytime pictures as night.

By having our cameras out all year long it provides us with a complete history of the game and the game have grown accustomed to the cameras being around. The only real flash problem was with one of our Talon cameras which when set on movie mode had a prolonged red pulsating red light. This red light when at eye level seemed to be a problem. We elevated this camera and the problem went away."
