I just enlarged the picture and enhanced it (Old Eyes).
There's absolutely no doubt in my mind he saw that camera.

I wonder why he didn't take it too.

if you catch a thief bust him hard, how many times has he done this and got away with it.?;' they are low lives and should have open season on them year round. if you do not want to be bothered all you have to do is convince everyone that you are insane. in my case there is no acting job needed. this thread wants be to get in my loin cloth and swing from tree to tree. i quess it would be more effective in the daytime. where you are may be a small town but i bet the local folks don,t like thieves any more than the rest of us. its time to act truly hazelvillebucks

Is the guy supporting a family or have payments to make? Does his employer have a policy against hiring a felon? Could he lose his job? Does he have a reputation to protect? How will his friends and family react to him being a thief? Does he have kids or grand-kids that would be ashamed of him? Do felons lose the right to own arms and therefore hunt in the US?

Sometimes the threat of prosecution will buy you more peace than an actual criminal conviction.

Lets face it, unless he has priors, he will likely just get a slap on the wrist. And if he is a bum from a family of bums...you might have a bunch of morons to worry about.

Weigh your options based on what you really need vs what you really want.

Oh, and other thing, if the guy destroyed the camera and the "good 'ol boy" sheriff convinces the bum to replace the camera... tell him it was a top level Ryconex :)

Remember that often small town cops often think of themselves more as "peace officers" instead of "law enforcement officers". A subtle difference but an important one. Being flexible might prove more advantageous.

Phoneguy, are you sure thats not Harvey Updike? I swear it's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the pic, for those of you who don't know or haven't heard he's the nut who poisoned all the trees at Toomers corner on Auburn U. campus. It appears that he is looking right at your camera like he doesn't care if you get a pic of him or not. I am assuming this is in Alabama by the way?

Guess I need to make it clear that he was not trespassing on MY land. Both cams were on the property line facing away from my property. There is a barbwire fence there and line is marked on the trees. Cam was on marked trees. His land is on the complete other side where our property lines touch. Here's a general map I drew.

Maybe he didn't steal it??
Why would he steal one and not the one that by the pic looks like he sees the cam that caught him?
Or maybe he wanted you to know he took it?

Blues, that's exactly what the Sheriff said and that's exactly why I'm letting him handle it. It was a 3 photo burst, 1st one he's walking up on it, not looking, 2nd is the one you see, 3rd one he's walking off not looking.
Why he didn't take the other one, I don't know but it was hid to a degree. Wasn't stuck out in the open like my Covert was.
Camera was only out there for 4 days, 3 1/2 really. Just seems odd I caught him walkin the trail and cam comes up missing.

That's why we don't put cams, stands and food plots near the property lines. Way to easy for lazy knuckleheads to feed off your generosity. don't always assume other people are as honest as you let alone trustworthy. Gotta stay one step ahead of the next joker or they'll leave ya pissed off and second guessing help one another out later on.

Good ole country we live in causes 50% of that and the other 50% is from the mutt bloodline they inherited by being born.

Maybe he did see the camera walking in to his plot and then on the way out decided he didn't like being photographed and grabbed the camera that he thought took his photo.

I really don't think he is the one that took your camera.Only thing I don't understand is why you would hide the one and not the other.
Did you suspect that someone would be along there who would steal the cameras other than him?

So before I leave Sat night I go to where my Covert is and hang his cam about 20 yards away pointing in the opposite direction down the trail. As I'm walking away from the cam I said to myself, I might want to hide this cam since its not mine, just incase, so I did.

Blues, was my buddy's cam. He's not real technical and couldn't figure out all settings so he asked if I would test it cause he couldn't get it to work. Ever since I've found this forum, I've been placing my cams differently, high and low, in between limbs/small trees just to see how deer react (i want to be JUST LIKE you guys  ). I just knew being on my line I could possibly have a visitor but didnt think thief. The price of that bushnell hit my brain about 30 seconds after I walked off. I've actually been talkin with a fellow on here the Thursday I went to my land about sending him a broke cam so he could catch his thief so it was fresh on my mind. Its not that I didnt care about my cam, just took extra precaution cause it was his.

I can understand that.
Another thought just occured to me.Maybe whoever did it just moved your cam down the line a little.Just as a prank since he knew you already had his pic.
I have a buddy that was bad at pulling pranks on folks. He never destroyed anything but little things to aggrevate a fellow.

That is the MO for some of the thefts in my part of the country. Move something and see if anyone is paying attention. If nothin, then go ahead and take it.

I few years ago I had a fallow pasture and one day some cattle showed up on it. Checked the fences and called my neighbors and no one claimed them. Ran into the sheriff's deputy at the coffee shop and mentioned it to him and he said it might be rustlers and he staked out the entry to the pasture. Took a month but then the rustlers showed up with a trailer. The cattle had been taken from a ranch a few miles away. When the owner hadn't noticed or alerted the auction houses the rustlers thought it was safe to go ahead and take them to auction for some quick cash.
