Got any ideas what caused this? Camera seems to be working fine. Had 23 videos with only this 1 glitch. Card maybe?

you got a video of a portal to a parrallel universe. I had a homebrew do something similiar, formatting the card fixed the problem. if you download the pictures again does the problem get better, worse or are any of the other vids affected?

I downloaded them into Picassa and then reformatted the card before I noticed it.
It was #5 of 23. All the others videos were good. Fresh batteries as the cam has been out
of service for a few weeks.
Also noticed it isn't marking front of videos with Date-time. None of the videos have it.
Here are clips #3-8 combined and sped up. Problem clip was #5

You don't format the card every time you take pictures off of it do you? That isn't good for the card.
Just move the pictures from the card to the computer.

It's just going to wear the card out quicker. There is just no need to reformat an SD card unless you are having problems with it.

So, when you are using the "format" function on a trailcamera, is this what you are talking about? Or are you talking about formatting the card with a pc? And is that the same?

I looked around the net and found a mention of what you talked about on forum, but it was a question about what someone had "seen"....not other hard info available.

Bottom line, the best thing to do is to delete the pics from your pc and thats it. Put it back in the cam and keep going. I mean its not a night and day difference but thats what I do

I'm not disputing that as fact, but I'm also not convinced that it is any better than DL'ing the pics to your pc and then formatting the card with the camera. I've always done it that way with my moultrie and my sony's and have never seen any problems in doing it that way.

There may be something to the idea of continual formatting being bad for a card, but I have not been able to find anything "concrete" concerning this. I'd be interested in seeing/reading some info on it.

I don't know squat about this computer stuff,I thought all formatting does is change the values of the pics so they aren't seen as there.New ones are imprinted over. This isn't like "wiping" memory is it? I have a program that can salvage the pics on a formatted or deleted card 98 % of the time.Deleting or formatting- the images are still there. Anyone know for sure?
I've always done mine this way for years. Once in a great while I will have a card issue.

Ok, I'll take a crack at it:

Flash memory experiences something called "memory wear". Basically there is a limited number of times any block on the card can be written to and erased; roughly 100,000 times. So, once a block is worn out, it is not reliable and may loose data.

Some applications are smart enough to keep track of which blocks were written to and how often and dynamically remap them (write leveling) others use a technique like disk drives to manage bad blocks.

So, to some degree, it probably depends on how sophisticated the firmware is in each camera and how if at all it manages the card.

In general, BBO is correct, the best practice is to delete pictures, not format the card each time. This only erases the blocks necessary to free up space. I believe formatting the card each time would defeat write leveling and bad block management techniques intended to prolong the life of the card (if the particular camera firmware uses them).

In practical terms, I'm not sure it matters a lot. I doubt my SG will outlast my SD card regardless of which technique I use to erase it!

Thanks,

Jack
