does anyone live and hunt around the dwarf chinkapin oak. a couple years ago i was looking for acorns from these trees i think the hazelvillebucks would love them. i have never saw one as far as i know. they are supposed to produce a acorn similar to white oaks . the variety i would want would be a small thickett forming oak not reaching over 20 foot high. i believe they start producing acorns in a few years. i have several area,s where i would like to give this tree a home. my wife and i drove out to yellowstone a couple years ago and made many side searches looking for this tree.i did find the full sized chinkapin in kansas but so far i have not come upon the dwarf. truly hazelvillebucks

We have upland pin oaks and northern pin oaks growing in areas around here(kind of unique in that the mean annual temp is 5-10 deg warmer than rest of area because of lake superior - same places you would find commercial apple orchards as near Bayfield WI)...they are in the white oak family and most are around 20 to 30 ft but not as tight or close together stemwise as you are describing i think. They are however a much preferred mast crop to the northern red oaks we have here and might do well for you.

Never heard of that dwarf oak around here. We have planted several saw tooth oaks that are great acorn producers and grow much faster than the traditional oak tree. We have quite a few white oaks on our land that the deer just wear out. Too many acorns this year as I think the deer were weighted down form the extensive crop. No need to travel far when their everywhere!
