Guess I'm the new guy here

Been reading the review for most of the summer trying to find the right camera to suit my needs.
One of my cameras is a sg550. I've had it for three or so years and last spring it quit taking pictures. Sent it back and had it repaired (new board...$90). After two weeks, it quit taking pictures at night. Well, just every other picture was black. I emailed them and they told me it was a writing problem to try different cards. I did and it didn't make a difference, so they said to send it back to them. Not really using the camera, I gave up on getting it repaired until I ran across the forum on this site. I found that it was probably a battery issue and got the camera out of the drawer. Put new batteries in and it works good as new....Almost.
Now when I plug the remote in, it beeps three times and the backlight on the remote lights up. There are some verticle lines on the remote sometimes and nothing else. The camera is taking pictures fine at the setups I had when the remote was actually working.
Do you guys thing buying a new remote would fix this or is it possibly a problem with the camera? Like I said, with the new batteries, the camera takes both night and day pictures great, just can't do anything with the remote....Thanks TIA.
