Purchased my first cam and plan and trying some of the outstanding camo techniques on forum here.
Woods in which I hunt are a friend who owns 40 acres who has a neighbor who has hunted without permission for several years and was told to stay off property and signs were posted.

I am somewhat leary about leaving a camera there ( even camo and up high ) as he does have a climber and land owner does not live on property. It is an IR so flash shouldn't be obvious.

Are there any cost effective devices that can be planted on cam which would allow cam to be traced in the event of a theft ? ( Some sort of transmitter which could lead police to the culprit's house ? )

Depending on the cam, you might be able to stash one of those little GSM/GPS trackers (made for concealing on cars) inside the camera case. Those units can be used to send a message if the vehicle exceeds a certain speed, goes outside a set of "geofence" coordinates, etc. But as small as they are, I think they'd be too large to attach inside most cameras. The batteries in the darn things have a lifespan about as long as that of a mayfly, too.

I never did find out if a SIM with a GPS chip on it would work as a tracking device for an SG580M. If the cam you were thinking of putting out there isn't a 580M, then that's moot, anyway.

All I can tell you is lock it up well. It's a pain to get a cam hung up when you're working above arm's reach. It's not much easier to take one down while up on a ladder, so being on a climber probably wouldn't be much better, especially if the user was trying to be sneaky about it.

Had a funny thought on buying a cheap IR camera facing the other camera to take picture of thief but would assume he'd have face concealed. Perhaps I might look into a high voltage shock triggered by camera removal........lol

Just remember to disable that before you do any work on the camera.

Something that releases a cloud of OC (pepper spray) if someone tampers with it could be an "attention-gettah," too. Maybe something with a nice hot pink dye in it.

I'll have to tag a note to my harness to remind me of pending danger as my memory isn't what it used to be ............

Tried camera out last night was getting ready to cover up lights ( sensing lights ) and noticed the 20 IR lights circling the lens lights up bright red while taking picture. Are all IR cameras like this and if so is this something that can be disabled ?
( I have an email into WGI )

I assume this obviously can not be covered up.

Looks like I might have to opt for the heavy dose of pepper spray or perhaps I might watch the old Rambo movies and fabricate some bamboo spike traps...........

You can cover the illumination array on a "red blob" camera and replace it with a "black flash" extender. Many of the members here are using the XtendIR-B from Uway for that purpose. <http://www.chasingame.com/index.php?id=132>
Just don't cover up anything for the motion detector, or the day/night sensor. Those are located in different places on the various camera makes and models.

Punji stakes; dang, that would discourage all but the most dedicated trespasser/thief, at least after they'd gotten into one.
