Hello, new guy here with a question.

I live out in the woods and have wanted a trail cam for a quite a few years. At night there are lots of interesting noises that I would love to investigate further. We do have our share of deer, bears, coyotes, foxes and the occasional bobcat and it would be so cool to get some pictures.

Well, speaking of wildlife, for the past week there has been a flurry of activity in our attic that has me perplexed and after setting multiple size "live catch" traps I have been unable to catch the critter. This would be the ideal time to purchase a camera in order to determine what animal I am dealing with. (and a good excuse to give the wife why we need such a device, ha ha.)

After the attic investigation the camera will be used mostly for night time wildlife observation. So, are there any cameras that really stand out in regards to their IR capability? Any and all opinions will be appreciated.

the moultrie m80 has an excellent flash range, is the best cam under $150, if you want a low glow that's barely visible to game the bushnell 119466 is the best $200 cam and it has HD video with audio

It would be hard not to consider the $50 Amazon special edition camera from wildgame.

here is the review from chasingame

Welcome to the forum...That wgi micro 6 red is a good way to introduce yourself to gamecams at a low price right now..going up in price I would recommend spypoint IR-5 at 120$ or covert CA3.0 at around 100$ The spypoint is really simple to setup and they also have the G4 model for 100$ at Gander mountain. Other than that if looking at a larger investment check out chasingame home and look at the reviews there and figure what you are most interested in for features/pic quality(mp)/video/trigger speed/flash and sensor range/battery life/size ...etc.

-Also look in the Trail camera pictures and movies for examples of pics from various cams...we usually list what cam took the pics

Hey guys, thanks for the quick replies and the good info.

I think I am gonna go with the WGI Micro 6 from Amazon for 49.99. This will be a good place to start and when I get better educated, then I will consider the more advanced cams.

Thanks and I will keep you posted.

I bet you have a squirrel in your attic.
Or a fox with a squirrel in it's mouth.

Seems like all the cams coming from there have been manufactured in Aug 2011 but check when you get it - if it is manufactured before Aug then you prob'ly have transition issues(whiteouts/blackouts) and should test right away. I don't think you'll have to worry but just check that manufacture date - it's on the inside of the access.

wolvenkinde, I will check, thanks for the tip.

NSH, Your probably right about the squirrel.
I have had mice. After a while, no more mice. Then found a couple of snake skins and figured out why the mice had disappeared.

I don't think this new critter is a snake. The sounds I hear are like rythmic walking. Maybe a squirrel or flying squirrel.

It's bigger then a mouse as it couldn't get the bait out of the small trap.

In the large woodchuck trap, it chowed down on the peanut butter but was too small to set off the heavy trap trigger.

I'm gonna take a dremel tool to the trigger mechanism of my medium trap to make it super sensitive. It has already eaten the PB without tripping this medium one, so he is gonna be in for a big surprise when those doors slam down.

I placed the order at Amazon for the WGI and it should be hear by the end of the week. I will probably have the critter problem solved before then.

I am really excited about the new camera and can't wait to set it up. Our house is surrounded by woods, so lots of good spots. Last winter we had a momma bear with a young'un denned up in a debris pile about 200 yards from our house.

Anyways, thanks everybody. I owe it to you guys for getting me psyched on this!

I'm thinking of trading some of my junk Chinese commercial cams for a nice homebrew.
