Hello everyone, I am 57 years old and from North Carolina. I have been deer hunting for many years. I retired when I was 53 after a career in law enforcement. I am enjoying every day of my retirement. Some days my biggest decision is where to go fishing. I just recently became interested in the trail camera part of deer hunting. I have two Covert 3.0 and two Moultrie M-80's. So far, so good but each one is less than two months old so we will see. I am also interested in the homebrew cameras, not smart enough to make one yet but find them interesting. Some of my other hobbies are collecting and restoring vintage cast iron cookware, and I really enjoy locating old mostly forgotten heritage apple trees, and grafting them onto new rootstock so they will be around for many more years. I am planting these re-born apple trees in a small orchard at my cabin in southwest Virginia where we spend most of each summer. I look forward to exchanging ideas with other forum members

Hi Rgilley!
I've never heard of a heritage apple tree, though I think I know what you meant. It is nice to know you will have prolonged thier lineage. Pretty neat stuff.
How would you recognize an old heritage apple tree?

Slay, what I call a Heritage apple tree is one that is 70 years old or older, and they could be a lot of different types. Mostly you will find these in old neglected apple orchards or at abandoned homesites. I try whenever possible to find out the names of the apples on the trees, which is sometimes hard to do. I have ten trees on hand that I had grafted from old trees at my place in Virginia and my wifes grandfathers old apple orchard in Ashe Co. NC. to plant next month. I have located three more old apple trees at some old homesites on my hunting leases which I am going to have grafted in a couple of weeks. This is the time of year to collect the scion wood and graft them. Its pretty addictive.

I have 3 old abandoned apple orchards right near my property. I have no idea how old the trees are unless i count the rings on one. They are stunted somewhat from having grown so high and close together. The apples are small because of this. I know that there are some sweet yellow apples and some sweet red ones in them thar trees. This was part of an old farm that was sub divided and sold in parcels.

Quick version of grafting a tree....cut scion wood from the donor tree(scion wood is just a name for a piece of the branch)...if you look closely...you will see a raised growth ring on the branch which indicates how long that branch grew in the most recent growing season. Usually this is 8 to 12" down the branch. I cut behind the growth ring....and I take three or four samples of each tree I want to graft. Then I take my scion wood to a local nursery and he grafts, grows the trees for one year for $20 each. When I pick them up they are about 6-feet tall. I am thinking of trying my hands at grafting this year on some extra scion wood myself.
