Well the company I work for is having a problem with a thief. This person(s) is filling up a tidy tank with fuel, and has gotten about $20,000 worth. We didn't notice the fuel disappearing we just noticed after it was to late. I was asked to put some cameras up near the location . Two nights ago I got video of them filling up (136 meg). But the camera was to far back and it was snowing. I had other cameras out but never got pictures them (but the cameras have be readjusted). The bad thing about this location is it's very remote. The guys did their deed at 2:30 AM.

My company is willing to pay for any of my equipment that gets stolen or damaged by the guys. I have to contact the fellow in charge of security for all our remote location and they (the company) may get in touch with the police to get involved.

Tell me what you see in the video so far we noticed:
1) ford diesel (lights on the mirrors)
2) nerf bars under the doors
3) you can see a dark stripe that rises over the rear wheel well
4) a different clip can see 2 men in the truck
5) appears to have 2 light force lights in the guard on the front of the truck
6) there is a red tidy tank in the back of the truck that holds about 60 US gallons

Pretty ballsy. I'd definitely switch to a low-glow or no-glow camera that takes high quality video. How do you know they saw the IR flash? If they did, do you think they'll be back? I hope your cameras land those crooks where they belong!

Only thing I notice other than what you stated was the wheel rims look to be larger diameter than normal stock...kind of foolish in snow as the they will pack up with ice and cause major vibration...I don't know if they are 20inch but they sure look larger than my 17in rims. Also maybe a 4 door...thought I saw a handle back there - so not just extended cab...fancy truck and can't be too many of those running around up there.

You need to look at the spypoint website,they have a security cams that red lic plates even with the vehicles lights on.

On a second note Here on the farms we get people stealing gas from time to time they brake in the barn and steal 5 gallon gas cans, so after a string of this going on for a while we filled a couple of cans
50/50 mix of gas and water and well end of problem. good luck

One of the favorite times of the day for thieves everywhere.


That's a good start. I recently saw a thread on another forum where somebody else from your side of the border was asking for help with identifying details on a truck that drove off with a trailer from his business late at night. Several viewers said it was probably an F-250 because of the badges on the doors, but narrowing down the year was harder. There was some disagreement about the lights on the mirrors, which could also be an aftermarket part.
Nobody was able to make out a front plate on that truck.


I hear ya. It's been a year or two since some of the thefts I caught on cameras, and nobody's been prosecuted or even charged yet.
Has your company given any thought to putting some dye in the fuel? A visible dye might be a deterrent. I think the covert type requires mixing suspected stolen (recovered) fuel with a reagent to produce the color change, but that would help prove where Mr. Thief's latest fill-up came from.
Apparently it's gotten pretty bad in the UK, too. As the guy said in the TV interview on one page of this site, having a quantity of fuel stolen can have a pretty bad effect on a trucking company's profits. <http://www.dieseldye.com/index.asp>

I also ran across this: <http://www.universalboot.com/underground-fuel-tank-lock>. That's big buck$ for a lock, but if someone is making off with thousands of dollars worth of fuel, the lock seems like cheap insurance.

Can you put a cam aimed at the spot where they backed in, to catch the rear plate? Maybe a "black flash" cam in a steel security case, disguised as an electrical box or something on that building behind the LP tank?

Can you or somebody you hire sit there hidden and wait for them? I know it's cold and boring but it would be worth it to catch them in the act.

If they drive in the same way I would set up another camera that would catch the back of the truck on the building you see in the background. They won't see it as they pass by from the rear. maybe it will record a licence plate.
If they saw the other camera I would leave it as a decoy.

The last employee to leave at the end of the day needs to roll out a tire spike strip and broom some snow over it then wait for the fun to begin and catch all of that happening on camera. Sooner or later the bandits will get bit by the snake.

Man I can't believe how we all think the same... marked fuel... wait to catch them (the red neck way) ... different cams... You are hitting it on the nail...

In my first post I made an error the fuel tank is not the red round type unit. Figured this out from a diffrent video showing one of them standing on top of the tank. Thus it must be the flat style.



The IR LED's are kind of bright for such a remote location but the police sure did like how they looked.
But they won't catch the bad guy.




You are right rims are larger and are chrome we think. The tires do look larger than stock. Plus you are correct after looking the clip over about 6 times your right crew cab. I also could see the Ford symbol in the grill. But the not many up here there are tons of new trucks all dolled up fancy. A few thousand men have poured in to the are in the winter from everywhere. There are camps set up in the middle of nowhere capable of housing 800 men at one location. There a lots of large camps up here.



Will have to check out the camera... The fuel is need to run the generator or we would mix in some chemicals to fix there wagons!!!





We are running dyed fuel but once its in the tank you can't tell what every one has..... As for the lock that looks like a good idea will pass this on to the boss.



We wish we could sit there and get them but they may only come once a week or two???? We don't know.




More cameras have been set up and are set to catch a rear view leaving and a side shot when coming in.

I delivered the videos to the local police and they were very impressed with what I had and gave me a few suggestions. A side shot of the truck may give away a company logo and also get a picture of the driver (they would like that the most). But the plate is a big one but the way I put out the P41 I should be able to get the driver coming in and the plate going out. Well I can hope I can.

Or maybe even an 'L' type. (The Tidy Tank site made me think of that. Now I know what a Tidy Tank is.)

I forgot to ask, are they siphoning it out of the tank, or pumping it from yours to theirs through the nozzle? The reason I ask that is, the same company that makes the tank filler cover lock also makes some anti-siphoning "blockades," with no opening larger than ¼". Those are sized for the tanks on various makes of trucks, but if you found one to fit the filler neck on your tank, it might be a much faster (and less expensive) way to show them that Freebie Fuel Supply has closed.
However, if it'll fit, the locking cap will also keep someone from putting "foreign matter" into the tank.

I like the way you think, too, but just don't forget it's there every morning. I heard a story maybe fifty years ago about a guy who "wired-up" his garbage truck to discourage overnight Halloween mischief. Guess who got knocked on his butt while climbing into his truck first thing in the morning on 11/01 of that year?

But I think now that they know a cam is there from seeing the IR's already , they might be all done and wont come back up with the truck

They might walk in and fill cans wearing hoods and masks. You will only catch them by picking up the vehicle they will be dropped off with. They might use cell phones to tell the getaway guy cans are full and start walking down the road a distance away from the facility where they get picked up

How many roadways are there ( entrance points ) to get into this facility ? you need to set up a cam at every entrance that will catch them going in and out even if its 1/4 mile away. Definately a black flash job on video to eliminate motion blur.

There is only 1 road in or out of here and its about 1 mile long. The cell phone thing won't happen because hanging out on the road when it's cold at -6 deg F. No one wants to stand around waiting for his buddy.

I'm not sure if they are pumping the fuel out with a pump or the are siphoning it. But the bad guys keep putting the threaded cap back on, kind of nice of them.

They saw it for sure. Don't look like they investigated it enough to be concerned. Walking around pretty relaxed like they know the place pretty good.

Might could set up a dummy cam and nail them on another hidden super well. Just something to think about cause it looks to me like if they come back out, they're going to be looking for red light and may investigate, take your cam and you out a cam, gas and hope in man
