I know both camlockbox and custom1 make boxes to fit my cameras, but I've never owned a lock box before. Which box protects the cam better( from theft/ the elements) Is one more user friendly than the other? Is the heavy duty worth getting vs the standard guage? Will the cams be easier to spot in a box? Right now the cams are held on with camo python cables. Should I just run pythons with a pad lock on the door? Your advice and opinions are appreciated. Rob

Custom 1 security boxes are built like a fortress . If you lag bolt it to the tree you would need a grenade to get the cam out

I dont know about the camlock box.

Yea, I have both standard and heavy duty Cam-Loc boxes for standard BTC's and standard duty Cam-Loc's for my 466C's. I absolutely love them! I hunt in areas of pretty heavy human traffic and have only had one taken (My fault--set on a dead, rotting tree!) The heavy duty cam-loc box seems like overkill to me, but is built like a tank! They are easier to spot in the woods than the standard box. All my cams are bolted to trees with case hardened lag bolts, with hardened washers. Python cables on trees stick out big time in the woods. And if its used to secure the cam to the tree the cam has to be re-aimed each time. Once the box is bolted it keeps the same position. (It takes only a minute to move a cam with screwgun and 2 minutes with a ratchet) Lag bolts basically come in 3 grades. NEVER use standard lags! They WILL snap off. One step up is stainless steel lags. They are sold in the bins at HD and Lowe's. 5/16" X 2 1/2" work well but thick barked trees may do better with 3". By far the BEST way to go is the hardened lags made for API tree steps, backed by hardened 5/16 washers. There is a guy on E-Bay named Montana Freak that sells them. You may have to slightly drill out the mounting holes in the back of the box, so trial fit them at home. I also buy a 4 pack of hardened locks, then spray them and key heads with stone look spraypaint. They are baked in the oven at its lowest temp for several hours, then set in the sun for a week or so. The next set of locks and keys get a different shade so they match. Hope this helped!

Thanks Pic-N-Stick, that was helpful! So basically I gather that a standard cam lock box, fastened with case hardened 5/16 x 3 or 4" lag bolts and hardened washers, and a hardened lock should be plenty safe. Does anyone have a camlockbox and a custom1? How do they compare?

I have never needed a 4" lag on a live tree. It may have helped on the dead tree my cam was stolen from, though! That said, remember that if someone sees your cam and truly wants it (and doesn't mind really working to get it) they WILL get it! A chainsaw or axe can remove part or all of the tree. All you can do is make it not worth the effort.

Well, I just ordered boxes and shrouded masterlocks from custom1ent. I like the design of the box, they look like a prybar would have a tougher time jimmying them open than the heavy duty camlockbox. I'm going to see if my bolt supplier can get me the hardened lag bolts. I ordered one extra since I'm sure I'll be getting a 476 sooner or later...

A couple steps up from the stainless are the API lag bolts I mentioned earlier. They are case hardened and have deeper threads than SS. Again, Montana Freak on E-Bay is the guy selling them. (if they are too much $, split them with a buddy or stick some on here for sale!) Back them with hardened grade 5 or 8, 5/16" washers from the bins ath Home depot or Lowes and you're good!
