First of all I did do a search using the search feature and did not find a good response to this question. All thought I'm sure somewhere this has been covered. I'm tring to come up for a good but inexpensive battery box for a 4.5 ah sla battery and some kind of sheild that covers the cord that will go from the batter box to the camera. I'm thinking that it might also want to be able to strap the box to a tree.
Thanks
Mike

My brother bought our grandma a set of clear plastic cereal containers from Walmart. They came in different sizes and the smallest is the perfect size for a 6v battery. In fact we are going to use it to hold a primos steroid pack for extra protection from rain and ants. Have not checked, but I bet you could find it for sale individually. I'd just check Walmart or the Dollar store for it or something similar.

I run 12v and 6v SLAs, and have for years. I lay the batteries at the base of the tree and toss some leaves on them. I run a thin power cord up the tree, like the ones that come on most wall chargers. The only problems I've ever had we're the occasional rodent chewing on the cord. I don't see a need for a battery box myself.

I made my own a couple of months ago. I bought a waterproof case from Walmart. The small was $6.88 and the large was $8.88. I got the large because I wanted to use, 2, 6v batteries and I ran them in parallel to maintain 6 volts. To protect the cord, I used
a water heater connector. This isn`t the size I used, but, you get the idea.
http://www.menards.com/main/water-heate ... 713773.htm

I drilled a hole in the bottom of the case then cut off one end of the water heater connector. I took the end that was cut, ran it through the case from the inside. I gooped it in place, inside and out. It`s solid. The water heater connector is flexible so it can bend where ever it needs to go.

You could use this instead of the heater connector.

I put the battery box, on the tree, right under the camera. The connector bends right around and up to the camera. Also, I nstalled a u-bolt on the front of the case and can run a python cable to secure it.

An ammo can seals nicely. Might be too big though.

I used a couple of containers from the Dollar General store. $3.50 each.

Thank guy's this gives me a jumping off point. I was hoping that someone would know of somekind of tape that I could wrap around the cord that rodents could not chew thur. Just a thought.

I have used the metal duct tape for sealing HVAC ductwork. I laid it out flat and put the wire down the center and then folded it over. The total length was about 4'. Worked good.

I use cookie tins that were just laying around, made out of metal so nothing can chew through them, drilled a hole in bottom for the cord, used them for over 3 months and no water got in, just they stick out on the tree, so i need to camo them before I put my cams back out, I have left over camera straps that I strap them just below the cam with, and all I need is some metal pipe like Deer Whiperer posted to protect the power cord.

Not sure of costs but single wire hydraulic hose may be cheaper as a conduit, possibly thicker though due to the rubber.

Thanks TRL I think I have some of that tape. I'll give it a try. Probably can even paint it.
The reason I don't think a pipe or flex conduit won't work in my case is I'm not putting the cam in a security box. I have a ltl-5210mm with internal antenna and I worry that a security box will interfere with cell reception. There has not been a problem with theft on my the deer lease so I should be ok.
I asked my wife if we had any kind of container that would work and she gave me a cantainer with a screw on top. Not sure if this is it but it looks like it. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ziploc-Twist- ... t/17341341
Just not sure how well it will hang on a tree. I give it a try and see.

My buddy uses the large red plastic Folgers Coffee cans. He painted them with his favorite camo pattern.

To protect the wires he uses old steel braided water hose made for bathroom and kitchen sinks. They ahve a teflon inner tube in them. A plumber buddy gave him several that had been replaced but other than a small water leak were fine. To make them longer he used brass fittings to screw them together.

Last spring Ice and water discharge my 6 volt to 3 volt and it took a crap. Got a new Battery.
I use a bottom half of a buck jam bottle with a custom paint job to the water off the top

Made a sheet metal tray to hold it on the tree.

Those plastic pistol cases with the eggshell foam work pretty good. If the battery is a little tight just remove some foam. You can buy them for less than $10

I've been thinking about using a small ammo can. If I can't hang the battery box up out of sight/reach, I'd like it to be rugged as well as lockable.
One source on the 'Net lists a ".30 cal." box, with dimensions of 10½" x 4" x 7" for $6.99. I imagine the shipping cost would be more than the $5.95 that shows up when the item is added to the cart.
Another vendor shows one at 3½" wide, 10" long, 6⅞" deep. I think those cans were for the belted .308 (7.62mm) ammo for the M60 machine gun. Couldn't find a price on those.
They'll probably turn out to be too large and unwieldy for a single 6V SLA. :|
