After hearing reports of this problem we have decided to test a solution.

Phase I:

We have used ortho home defense insecticide for a number of years in our homes and businesses. One of the choices for using this chemical insecticide concoction was the lack of that terrible insecticide odor and its very good effectiveness. My thoughts were to take a Cudde cam and spray the inside and let it dry and install the batteries and put it out for a test to see if the smell bothered the deer. I would assume that it would not, being that it is inside the cam. If this should work it might be an answer to the new development where the ants are setting up house inside some of the new cams. We found that this spray is very residual and will kill months after application. My plan will be to actually hang the cam on the corn feeder and put another cam to watch the reaction of the animals around the feeder. This will also be viewable on our live web cam which should be back up shortly provided all goes well. This test will begin tomorrow.

Ortho Home Defense:

Here are Phase I results photos: (deer seem to pay little attention to the Cudde camera)

Phase II:

Once it is determined that the smell is of no bother to the deer we will actually stand the cam up in a fire ant hill and leave it with the cover open fired up with batteries in to see if this insecticide is an effective deterrent.

8-14-06 update: After 24 hours, no ants in the cam. Last night there was slight chance of rain so I put a small roof over the cam just incase we got a few drops.

Conclusion: Ortho Home Defense will keep the ants and insects out of your cam, and it appears to not be offensive to deer. This will be good news to the 06 Cudde owners, just a little spray and a roof and two of the major problems with the 06 Cuddebacks will be minimized.

Having had problems in the past with ants I'm going to have to try that. Thanks!

Well, next we have to see if the orho will repell that ants... Its raining here (I never thought I would complain about that) but as soon as it clears up will perform a test to see if the ants are repelled by the Ortho.

Phase II is underway. We have them powered up and siting in a red ant bed. We will try and determine if the ants are repelled.

Note: See the initial post in this thread for pictures.

One question. Why do you let FIRE ants live so close?

Well both Bill and myself had no evidence of ants on our properties so we had to go down the block to a neighbor who had to look around over his property to just find one hill. We do not tolerate these critters around here.

These ants are a menace throughout the southeast and the reports we received were from all over stating the invasion into the 06 Cudde cameras. We went to work to come up with an answer so the folks in the field might have a way to continue to use a loved cam that had some design defects.

I too just experienced a major ant move in to my cuddeback 3.0. I didn't run in to the problem at all last year, but there must have been 600-1000 ants in the camera. The camera took 80 pictures during the invasion but when I checked the camera the batteries were dead and it was literally crawling with ants and eggs(or whatever the white stuff was they were carrying around). I will definetly use the ortho treatment before setting it back out, I still have to do a test run at home to be sure the camera is working properly.
