HCO Rangefinder Model Okoo RF-1000S
The good people at HCO took time off from
their camera business to screen the market for another associated item that
they could add to their inventory of products. This new product is the
Okoo RF-1 rangefinder. This is a small 4 ½ X 3 ¼
inch handful comes in a soft flat black color. It is about the ultimate in
being non reflective other than the two main
lenses. The optics are fully coated and are fixed
at 7 power. The objective lens is 25 mm and tucked back under a protective
rubber lip. How does a camera review outfit take on a range finder for the
purpose of a review? Well it started like this, imagine you have a main road
through your property and you want to space several cameras along this road
at a given distance during that time of year you are doing your game census.
The interval is 40 yards and the road is about a mile long. The old tape
measure or the “stepping it off” thing will work but involves a lot of work.
With the range finder it is just a push of a button to view the exact tree
that is at that distance. In the case where trees are few and far between
and all you have is brush (Texas) then you
need a second person to move down the road and you can shoot of him to get
the distance. After the cameras are set up, you can use it for setting up
your stands and measuring off to certain shooting spots. Once you get use to
having one then when it is not there you will miss it. The closest distance
that the Okoo will measure is 12 yards and the
max distance is 990 yards. This does not mean that you can measure the
distance to a deer at that distance. What it means is something that is
large and reflective like a building can be measured. Small animals like
deer can be picked out to about 300+yards and trees can be measured to
around 500 yards. I have been giving all the measurements in yards but this
rangefinder will also switch to meters for those that prefer that method.
This range finder has an accuracy of plus or minus one yard, which is pretty
close for people who need the shooting distance to allow for bullet drop.
This is even more critical for those archery users who practice at given
yards and have their pins set to those distances. Once in the stand it is
easy to shoot a bush or tree with the range finder to pick out distances
around the stand for that time when old big moves into the area. The use of
a range finder during early morning hours when the light is weak is very
good. The coated optics help to pull in the light and when I did this I was
able to pick out detail that I definitely could not see with my naked eye.
At 7 power it can also take the place of
binoculars when what you carry to the field must fit in a certain space and
limited. A couple of standard AAA batteries are all it takes to get this
thing on the road and there is no learning curve. I ran through a bunch of
my catalogs and this little devil is a lot cheaper than what is in the
catalogs and it has like features. I bought several over the years and when
Anthony decided to become William Tell and took up archery I bought one for
him to use. His method is to stick some small ground markers at different
distances around his stand. I can see no difference in the measuring ability
of any one of these brand names. This is a rugged functional tool which most
anyone would be proud to take to the field and use. Being it is a field item
it has to be weather resistant. This does not mean you can jump in the lake
with it in your pack while dodging a bear and expect it to not get wet. But
it can be used in the rain to do a measurement without fear of problems. The
nice small size will allow it to fit in a jacket pocket which my high dollar
finder will not come close. I have to keep it around my neck or in the pouch
on my ATV. The price is less than $200 and is available at most HCO dealers.
I spent the afternoon zapping
distant trees with my high dollar $499 and this HCO range finder. Mine has
some bells and whistles that I never use but did have one feature that would
allow it to be used in the rain. These devices shoot out a laser bean and
then it will wait for it to be reflected back and this stops the timer. The
amount of time is converted to distance like radar does when it is looking
into the sky at a distant plane. When it is raining the beam would bounce
off the rain and come back to soon and give you a false reading. For the
extra three hundred dollars I guess I could wait for the rain to stop to
take the measurement. Even though this tool does not have the rain feature
it did turn in identical measurements as the other rangefinder it was up
against. Both measured by tape and by range finders showed this range finder
is accurate and dependable. A very good buy for the price.

Several trips to
the field have proven that this range finder is well priced and posesses a
high degree of accracy. The size allows it to slip in a shirt pocket just
fine. The 7 power magnification allows it to pull extra duty as a monocular.
We are very happy with the function and definitely would not feel slided
pulling it out in front of my hunting buddies. This review is closed
