Primos Proof Cam 03/August 21, 2017

Manufacturer model #: 64056.

The Proof Cam 03 Blackout is the next and final unit I will be testing in this year’s Proof cam line up, notated as “Gen 2”.  If you head to the store to buy one make sure you see the Gen 2 or check the model number as it is very similar to previous models with the same name.  This is a relatively small camera with a front face wrapped in a greenish camo pattern, while the back is solid green color.  On the front is an LED array that encircles the camera lens.  The LED array is black in appearance and this is definitely a black flash camera.  Present is the python strap around the front of the camera which in my opinion is a good design for those who do not want to spring for the steel lock box but want better than average security.  This design at least keeps someone from opening the camera and tinkering with it or removing the SD card.  It is a better design for the Python in my opinion.  This is not a new design and I am glad the designers kept this feature.  The bottom of the unit supports an external battery port and a threaded insert for mounting while the back/sides offer a strap slot.  I have a small complaint about the strap slots because I can’t use my CustomOne Enterprises adjustable mount with this camera.

Like the Proof Cam 01 and 02, this unit uses switches to change its settings.  all you do upfront is set the date and time once and you are off to the races.  The tiny screen provides status information and picture count.  The screen and the switch panel are lighted but the buttons are not.  Better take a flashlight with you.

This little camera offers everything the average consumer needs in a camera with an easy to use interface.  i had the camera up and running quickly.

Progress and Activity
08-21-2017 Update: Unboxed
I unboxed this unit and find it has a familiar look to units I have tested in the past for Primos as well as the same mold as the Proof Cam 01. I have placed this camera in the queue to get tested.
09-01-2017 Update: Photo Samples
Over a period of several days I captured a large sampling of photos only to realize I had not set the camera date. The time is correct.  The photo samples will have the wrong date but this is not a malfunction on the part of the camera but the user instead.  Even thought the date is incorrect I can confidently say the camera has trouble with light metering.  The photos on the most part are wither under exposed or over exposed to the point of total white out.  This camera is in need of a firmware update for this issue.

09-16-2017 Update: Video Samples
I managed to capture a large set of video clips however, and unfortunately the camera appears to have been bumped and as a result it was aimed too low. The clips still look good and exhibit the characteristics of the video quality. There is usable audio on these video clips although with a background noise that requires turning speakers up to hear details. I will put the camera back out in video mode with the aim better and post a second set of videos.
09-16-2017 Update: Video Samples 2
I placed the camera back out with a better aim and got a really nice set of video clips this time. This camera performs well in video mode.
11-09-2017 Update: Battery Life
This camera captured 9155 photos and 548 videos over 8 weeks. This review is complete.
