I have used that set up for about 6 years with my homebrews. It works well until a tree rat or coon climb up on your camera. Then you find them tipped forward aiming at the ground or base of the tree. The first year they screw in nice and easy when the lag is sharp. After that it is easier to take a drill or replace the lags.

I bet the lag eye screw would stay sharp for many years if you "upgraded" to a stainless steel lag...I use stainless lags in all of my screw-in mounts just for that reason. :P

I made a couple of these today. I did use a 3/8 wing nut instead of the nex nut and it seems to work great.

I made several of these over the last year. They do work well.

However, I couldn't make them anywhere close to under $1 each. I can't remember exactly how much, but my cost in parts at the local hardware store was about $5. That's buying everything one-at-a-time. I imagine if you made a bulk buy it might be cheaper.

One thing I did notice was that as hunting season got closer, finding the appropriate eyes-screws and eye-bolts got tougher. Seems like a lot of hunter may be using this method.

I am in the process of making this mount : http://www.ebay.com/itm/400578771113?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

i found that ball swivel on ebay for 3-4$ shipped and that bolt is called a "hanger bolt" which i picked up at my local hardware store for 40-50 cents. So for under $5 I can make that.

Jake:

Do you have a link to that ball swivel? The only one I found on ebay is from "paxlycom" in CA.

Thanks

The hard part of that design is how you get the hanger bolt into the tree.

What are your ideas for doing that?

You bind two nuts together on the machine thread and use the top one as a bolt head.
