This camera appears basically the same as the 2013 Ultra Blackout we tested which has still not completed its battery test! We will test the function of this unit without the super charger battery pack as no doubt it will help keep this unit going a year or more.
For information on the super charger battery pack please refer to this camera from 2013. It looks and functions the same. This line of cameras promote switches for setup rather than the menu driven style on many cameras. I like this feature as it is quick and easy to set up in the field. A simple LCD screen to set up date and time saves production costs which should be passed on to the consumer.
One of the most noticeable differences this year is the addition of HD video with audio. I do not see a way of disabling the audio if you do not want it. Video tests do reveal 720p video with audio.
The base camera runs on 8 AA batteries and settings are changed using the switches which means quick and easy setup in the field. The python through design provides better than average security without a lock box. This camera is shipped as a package with the Super Charged battery pack which adds 16 more AA batteries to the original 8 in the camera. This means 3 times more amp hours over the 8. The camera will operate without the battery pack but according to the documentation this provides a higher amperage to the led array boosting the flash range. Keep in mind we will not test with the super charger attached.
Dark room tests reveal true black flash, no visible light in photo or video mode and no filter clunk that I can hear. Thunderstorms just rolled in so I will attempt to get some range shots tonight and day shots tomorrow.
I found a few moments of dappled sunlight in between storms and managed to capture some day range shots. These appear dark and underexposed. The 8 plate is fairly crisp but I will have to monitor the day time exposure. This time of year the canopy is full and pretty dark in any case.
This camera is a consistent performer with the right ingredients. I think it wins the award for longest name though. Just what will they call next years model?
